About the Auxiliary

A message to prospective members from Auxiliary President, Loretta Murawski -

The American Legion Auxiliary Gold Star Unit #676 meets every third Monday of the month at 7 p.m.  This is the same time the Durand Legionaries have their meetings. Our fiscal year is July-June so membership payments are due in July of each year.

Unit #676 always keep Durand Legionnaires, area veterans, and community in mind in planning our events. We have honored many Durand organizations and groups, to name a few: the Durand school bus drivers, the Volunteer Fire Department and EMT's, Durand teachers, and our own Legionnaires.

We support District 12, Division 2, and Department of Illinois financially in all areas such as: military individuals, military children, veterans hospitals and rehab centers, education and scholarships, and much, much more.

Over the past several years we have sponsored young ladies, entering their Senior year of high school, to go to Illini Girl State.
We have proudly had scholarship winners go on to college.

As our main fundraiser, we provide sandwiches, chips, and pies during the Legion's fundraisers: Ham-Go the Friday before Good Friday and Feather Bingo the Friday before Thanksgiving.

There is a monthly newsletter called PostScripts that is sent to all members and friends interested in supporting the Legion and Auxiliary. If you would like to be put on the email list to receive this newsletter, please tell us.

The Post 676 Auxiliary invites women who are interested in joining to contact Sherry Meinert at sherry.meinert@gmail.com

Girls State 2025 Candidates Sought

The American Legion Auxiliary’s marquee Girls State program, first presented in 1937, is one of the most respected and coveted experiential learning programs presented in the United States.

The program epitomizes the ALA’s mission to honor those who have brought us our freedom through our enduring commitment to develop young women as future leaders grounded in patriotism and Americanism. The young women become knowledgeable of the democratic process and how our republic form of government works at the state and national levels.

American Legion Auxiliary Illini Girls State is a week long program dedicated to providing training for young women in city, county, and state government. They are placed into a two party system and will run for office, campaign, vote, and write legislation pertinent to American Legion Auxiliary Illini Girls State as well as the state and nation.

Along with forming their own government of these three levels, they will also hear from guest speakers in the political arena (present and past), veterans and/or active service men and women, American Legion Auxiliary members, and motivational speakers. Americanism and flag etiquette are taught this week as well.

Along with the educational benefits and the importance of voting and getting involved in your community, state, and nation, our goal is also to give young women confidence and knowledge to go forward in their adult lives and not be afraid to go for their dreams.

We are looking for candidates to attend each year. The dates are usually in late June, in Charleston, IL. Contact the Post 676 Auxiliary if interested.
